Grand Haven Child Custody Attorney

Protect Your Rights and Your Children in Michigan Child Custody

We know that parents want what is best for their children. Unfortunately, during a divorce or separation, issues of child custody and visitation can be difficult to resolve. Custody battles are not pleasant for anyone, especially the children who are involved, and it is not always easy to make effective long-term decisions.

At the Burda Law Offices, PLC, we use our experience and knowledge of child custody laws in Michigan to help our clients preserve their relationships with their children and protect their best interests. If you have concerns about child custody or visitation, we invite you to discuss those issues with a family lawyer at a free initial consultation.

We Can Help You Understand Michigan Child Custody Laws

It is almost always preferable when parents agree to cooperate with one another on issues impacting their children. Not only does an amicable solution typically save both parties a tremendous amount of time and money, it is generally more effective at helping clients preserve and protect the relationships they have with their children.

When parents cannot agree on issues of custody and visitation, family court judges use 12 factors set forth in the Michigan Child Custody Act to determine custody. These factors include: Burda Law Offices

  • The love, affection and other emotional ties between the parents and the child
  • The capacity and disposition of the parties involved to give the child love, affection and guidance
  • The capacity and disposition of the parties to provide the child with food, clothing and medical care
  • The length of time the child has lived in a stable, satisfactory environment
  • The permanence, as a family unit, of the existing or proposed custodial home or homes
  • The moral fitness of the parties involved
  • The mental and physical health of the parties involved
  • The home, school and community record of the child
  • The reasonable preference of the child, if the child is of sufficient age
  • The willingness and ability of each of the parties to facilitate close and continuous communication with the child
  • Domestic violence
  • Any other factor considered to be relevant by the court

Our firm will help explain these factors and help you know what to expect out of the process.
